The 50th annual International Astronautical Congress, being held in Amsterdam this week, is focusing on the role of space in the information age.

Topics to be addressed include: astrodynamnics, Earth observations, space and natural disasters, life sciences, materials and structures, microgravity sciences, satellite communications, space and education, space exploration, space power, space propulsion, space stations, space systems and space transportation. Conferences for students also are scheduled.

" I hope this Congress encourages a human network through which anyone interested in space, however old or young, whether in science or in industry, can exchange their ideas and stimulate each other," said Tomifumi Godai, president of the International Astronautical Federation.

The conference opened Monday with sessions about developing new markets for communications satellites. Tuesdays panels focus on the role of space technology in developing countries and using space-based remote sensing systems to monitor Earths environment.
